Road Map from Johannesburg to DurbanTake out your road map from Johannesburg to Durban and plan a legendary roadtrip! While the N3 is the direct route, diverging from its path are plenty adventures waiting to happen! This busy freeway from Joburg to Durban is a toll road with five toll plazas at Heidelberg, Villiers, Tugela, Mooi River and Marianhill. Some of these are avoidable if you use the alternate route, the R103. It’s a good idea to use cash for the tolls as only specific cards are accepted. The first half of the drive is uneventful, unless you stop at Heidelberg to amble around the town and admire its Victorian architecture. It also has a motor museum housed in a 19th century railway station. You’ll pass the towns of Villiers and Warden, and further down the highway you’ll reach Harrismith, the halfway point between Johannesburg and Durban. The road map from Johannesburg to Durban proffers a variety of routes into both the Battlefields and the renowned Drakensberg mountains from Harrismith onwards. Touring the Battlefields in the Harrismith-Ladysmith-Escourt region is a worthwhile and fascinating experience. Arrange a tour, visit the Siege museum, and stand on the battlefields of old (one of which is in the Spioenkop Dam Nature Reserve)! It’s hard to imagine the sights and sounds of war in places now so tranquil and quiet. A few days in the Berg is a wonderful getaway for those wanting to rest as well as those in quest of adventure. If you’re wanting to rest, the Berg has lovely accommodation, wonderful food, pampering spas, strolls around peaceful dams, and even chaise lounges overlooking mountain ranges. If you’re adventurous there is rock climbing, abseiling, hiking, horse riding, and hot air ballooning. Most Berg resorts also have activities and sports facilities for their guests’ pleasure. Hiking, golfing and fishing tend to be particularly popular pursuits. Summers are very hot and winters are cold with seasonal snow. If you decide to stay in the Monks Cowl/Dragons Peak area, try to attend a concert by the Drakensberg Boys Choir, a world class music ensemble. There are a number of game and nature reserves between Harrismith and Durban. These include: Spioenkop Dam Nature Reserve Whether you like hiking, mountain biking, bird watching or boating, you will find a reserve that caters to your idea of a good time. Each of these venues has much on offer. When you get to Mooi River you’ve reached the lovely and pastoral Natal Midlands. A Johannesburg-Durban road trip would not be complete without a detour on the R103 to do the Midlands Meander. The Midlands Meander is a route leading to a “community” of people and places who offer accommodation, food, crafts and handmade products, etc. Stop at a farm stall for “padkos” (food for a roadtrip), browse for locally made jewellery, and visit the lavender farm for wonderful farm-made home and beauty treats. Your road map from Johannesburg to Durban still has some mileage in it! Tour Pietermaritzburg (the capital of KwaZulu Natal) and appreciate its architecture and history. On your way down the freeway take the R103 to travel the country route through the valley of a Thousand Hills. Spend some time at PheZulu for a Zulu cultural experience. From there, wend your way down the M13 and back onto the N3. You’ll find Durban just down the hill.
