Driving in Port ElizabethDriving in Port Elizabeth is the best chance you have to make the most of your time in the area. Locals call it a “20 minute city”, meaning you can get from one end to another in a quick twenty minutes. Traffic jams are the exception rather than the norm. Port Elizabeth is known by her initials, (PE), and as “the Friendly City”, “The Windy City”, and the watersports centre of South Africa. Irrespective of its windy reputation, it has one of the best coastal city climates in the world. Weather and water temperatures are temperate all year round, which means that watersports are a happy constant. There is such a profusion of great beaches along the PE coastline that if you’re a beach fan you’ll probably do quite a bit of driving to find your favourite. Each beach has a different character and so attracts complementary visitors. In general, the temperate water and weather draw people to PE like a moth to a flame. There is a variety of beaches suited to swimming, surfing, sailing, bodyboarding, diving, windsurfing, kitesurfing, and sandboarding, to name a few. Other beaches work better for walkers, horse riders and hang gliders who take off from the dunes. PE is proud to have three Blue Flag beaches: Humewood, Hobie and Kings. A Blue Flag beach is recognised worldwide as a clean, safe beach with good facilities for beachgoers. When driving in Port Elizabeth , you might like to visit its share of great nature and game reserves. Birdwatchers will be partial to the Cape Recife Nature Reserve with its bird hide and excellent bird watching. You’ll probably want to stay overnight or at least do a day trip to the Addo Elelphant National Park to see these amazing giants. Addo is known for its Big Seven; the Big Five plus whales and the Great White Shark. The Baviaanskloof Wilderness area is rich with biodiversity and worthy of a visit. It’s even been short listed for World Heritage Site status. The Chelsea Conservancy, Sardinia Bay Nature Reserve and Sylvic Nature Reserve and Bushy Park have scenic trails to walk and lovely views to behold. For the water addicts and the generally sporty, Port Elizabeth is a paradise. Water and beach sports are easily available, trail walking, hiking and horse riding is accessible and there is opportunity to learn new skills like sandboarding or hang gliding off the dunes. If you prefer shopping, eating out and cultural pursuits, PE has the Boardwalk Casino Complex, the Greenacres shopping centre and St George’s Park. St George’s Park has two art galleries and hosts a monthly “art in the park” event. History buffs will be interested in the Donkin Heritage Trail, a 5km walk which follows in the footsteps of the 4000 British settlers who arrived in PE. Central Hill is another place to explore with its historic monuments and British settler history. The Bayworld Museum Complex is one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions. Cultural and natural history are the focal point of the museum, which hosts some remarkable exhibits. The Oceanarium is a favourite for its dolphin and seal shows and the Snake Park is known for its rare species and daily demonstrations. The 7 Castle Street Museum offers an exploration of a 19th century Settler cottage. Driving in Port Elizabeth is a pleasure and will be very much part of your PE experience. Whether in the city or discovering its neighbouring attractions, make the most of your visit and enjoy the drive.
