Drive the scenic route Durban to Cape TownThe scenic route Durban to Cape Town is an extraordinary drive, whichever route you choose. The two most popular routes are along the coast and through the country (interior). A third route offers a combination of both. Through the country (interior) The N3 out of Durban will lead you up the hill and into the highlands of Harrismith with the Drakensberg on your left. Along the way there is a profusion of wonderful places to stop and visit, as well as rest for the evening. If you like, turn off at Hillcrest and take the R103 (you can get back on the N3 quite easily), and drive through the picturesque Valley of a Thousand Hills. When you get to the lush and lovely Midlands, take some time (overnighting is even better) to do the wonderful Midlands Meander. If you’re a history fan you may want to do some exploring in the Estcourt; Ladysmith and Harrismith areas as they are fascinating historical military sites. The scenic route Durban to Cape Town through Bloemfontein and Beaufort West takes you through the Karoo: arid, unique and unusually beautiful. Peace and tranquillity live here. Traditional Karoo farms are known for their food and hospitality, so stay an evening to break your trip. After the dryness of the Karoo, be refreshed by the verdant vineyards and orchards of the Cape Winelands. The views are quite spectacular as you drive through the mountains. Wine connoisseurs will relish kelder (cellar) tours and wine tastings, while teetotallers will enjoy other wine farm offerings and accommodation. There is an abundance of breathtaking drives and enchanting kelders to visit. Cape Town is just an hour or two down the N1. Along the coast If you are partial to undulating green hills and pretty sea views, the drive down the Hibiscus Coast will be right up your alley. The N2 from Durban takes you south along the coastline and then inland through the Transkei. Should you have time on your hands, take a detour to one of the uncorrupted holiday areas on the Transkei coastline and sleep over. As you drive, watch for animals as they tend to own the roads! From East London you’ll drive to Grahamstown, home to the beautiful Rhodes University and full of interesting nooks, crannies and history. While Port Elizabeth is a holiday destination of note within itself, it also serves as the start of the renowned Garden Route, a dramatic and beautiful drive from PE to Heidelberg. Make sure to visit the Tsitsikamma National Park. This magnificent area offers fantastic hiking and canopy tours, wonderful bird watching and delicious meals among many other options. As the N2 continues towards Cape Town, keep your camera ready for the incredible views you’ll see. Country to coast If you want to take the scenic route Durban to Cape Town and you’d like a bit of both worlds; country and coast; drive up from Durban to Bloemfontein, and down to East London and then Port Elizabeth. From there drive the Garden Route. The Bloemfontein-East London (N6) part of this drive will take you from the Free State Highlands, through the Karoo plains and down to the coastal dunes of PE. Enjoy Bushman paintings, historical sites, hiking trails, and game viewing along the way.
